A static address is required to use the Pull broadcasting method of Windows Media Encoder. If the encoding computer has a dynamic IP address (most DSL and Cable Internet connections are dynamic), there are free services available that simulate a static address. No-IP.com is a dynamic DNS service provider that points a domain name (such as yourname.no-ip.info) to your IP address, even when your IP changes.
To use No-IP.com’s free service, visit their website (www.no-ip.com)
- In their top banner, click “Sign Up Free!”
- Fill out the requested information, then click “Sign-up Now!”
- Once you have signed in, download the update client application for your encoding computer. This little program will communicate with No-IP’s DNS computers whenever your dynamic IP changes.
- Install and run this program on your encoding computer.
Add a host
Now you will need to add a host to your No-IP.com account.
- Log in at No-IP.com.
- On the left under “Hosts / Redirects”, select “Add”.
- In the center of the page under “Hostname Information”, fill out the appropriate information.
- For “Hostname” enter a unique name relevant to your stream (i.e. myradio128k).
- All other settings within “Hostname Information” are best left at their default values.
- Click “Create Host”.
Update DNS
- Open the update client program installed on your encoding computer.
- Place a check in the box next to the host name you want to associate with that computer.
I’ve configured my Dynamic DNS. Now what?
You now have Dynamic DNS. If you are setting up a Windows Media Encoder pull stream, you’ll also need to configure port forwarding on your network.
