What are the PUSH and PULL Methods?

For Windows Media Encoder and Real Producer, there are two methods for broadcasting the source stream to our server. We recommend using the Pull method if at all possible. It's more reliable than the Push method.

For the Pull broadcasting method, our servers tune into your encoder to get the source for the stream. Your computer and local network will need to be configured to allow our server access to your encoder. Once your computer and local network is set up correctly, all you have to do is turn the encoder on.

With the Push method, you point your encoder to our servers and log in with a username and password. This is a less robust solution, as you have to manually restart the stream every time there is any loss of connectivity.

****PLEASE NOTE****

There is a bug in the Windows Media Push encoders - when there is a network error, the encoder will continue to broadcast to the server, not realizing that it is in fact offline. If you use the Push method we cannot guarantee that your streams will stay connected all the time.

To set up the PULL method, you'll need two things: a static address, and port forwarding to be configured on your network router. For instructions on setting up the Pull publishing method, visit our Knowledgebase article titled: "How to Setup Windows Media Pull"
